Big In Japan is a touring exhibition of six contemporary Japanese artists born in the late-60s and early 70s. Featuring works by Takahiro Jujiwara, Hiroyuki Matsukage, Yuki Kimura, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Risa Sato and Saki Satom; they interrogate the complexity of Japanese popular culture as it has evolved beyond western influences. Big in Japan provocatively satirizes aspects of contemporary Japanese consumer culture and urban living. The exhibition casts an often whimsical, often disturbing light on Japan’s postwar, post-economic miracle milieu. It is particularly striking in contrast to more benignly traditional representations of Japanese culture circulated in the past. This show had piqued widespread interest.
